Benefits of Custom Walkways

  • Reduce accident risk – compliant safe access for elevated machinery inspections
Ever had that sinking feeling when an HSE inspector walks in unannounced? We have-back in 2013 at a plant in Attercliffe, a missed toe-board nearly cost the client their safety record. When elevated access points are fitted to BS EN ISO 14122 standards-guardrails at 1100 mm, toe-boards no less than 100 mm, anti-slip patterns with a wet SRV of ≥55-those hazards drop off the radar. That’s not theory; it’s a measurable, physical barrier against falls, dropped tools, and awkward conversations in the boardroom. And here’s the kicker: a compliant system lets you hand the inspector the certificate before they even speak. Compare that to scrambling to justify a “temporary” scaffold that’s been there six months-what would you rather?
  • Improve workflow efficiency – separate foot traffic from forklift lanes in busy factories
Picture this: your busiest shift, forklifts swinging round with a 3.0 m turning radius, pedestrians darting between racking, production orders backing up like traffic on the M1 after a lorry spill. We’ve mapped traffic flows in facilities from Rotherham to Runcorn, and when you take foot traffic overhead, the bottlenecks vanish. Painted lines? Nice idea-until they’re worn away or someone decides the shortest route is the “technically forbidden” one. Overhead steel walkways don’t ask for compliance-they enforce it. Which would you prefer: constant vigilance or a physical separation you can forget about?
  • Seamless integration – custom-fit designs for new production lines or retrofits
Ever tried threading a fully welded gantry through a building where the main contractor swears there’s “plenty of space” between that ductwork and the beam? (Spoiler: there wasn’t.) In new builds, timing is everything. Bring it too early, it’s in the way of cranes; too late, you’re cutting it into pieces. We sequence delivery down to the hour, model the site, and laser-measure to ±1 mm, so bolt holes line up first time. In retrofits, that accuracy saves hours-sometimes days-compared to those old “cut-and-hope” jobs.
  • Long-term durability – weather-resistant steel for hybrid indoor/outdoor use
Sheffield’s no stranger to damp mornings, and if your walkway crosses from a climate-controlled plant to an open yard, you’ve basically got a condensation factory. Galvanising with ≥85 µm zinc coating means even a scratch won’t start rusting-chemistry’s on your side. Powder coating with UV stabilisers? Perfect for keeping colour on branding-heavy zones without the “industrial grey” look. Ever seen primer-painted steel after two winters? Flaking, streaks of rust, and the sinking feeling of knowing you’ll have to pay for it twice. With the right ISO 12944-rated finish, you’re thinking in decades, not seasons.

How to Choose Between Specs

Modular vs Fixed Systems

  • Modular – Imagine Lego on a 5 kN/m² load rating, bolted with M16 grade 8.8 galvanised fixings. Best for plants where machinery shuffles more than a football manager’s lineup in December. You can dismantle, move, reassemble without losing strength-solving that “what if we retool?” anxiety. Why choose it? Because redeployable assets are budget gold.
  • Fixed – Welded in place, S275 or S355 grade steel, full-penetration welds with a 6 mm throat. This is the “plant pot in concrete” option: it’s staying. If vibration control’s critical-think precision CNC-or you’re building for the next 20 years, fixed gives you zero bolt checks and rock-solid stability.

Galvanised vs Powder-Coated Finish

  • Galvanised – Hot-dip at 450 °C, coating inside and out. Ever cleaned a hollow section only to find rust blooming from the inside? That’s why you galvanise. With ≥85 µm coating, you’re buying insurance against Sheffield rain, yard washdowns, and chemical mist. Choose it when failure isn’t an option.
  • Powder-Coated – Electrostatic polyester or epoxy at 180-200 °C, 60-80 µm thick with a 25 µm zinc-rich primer. Want hygiene zone colour coding or your company blue running along the mezzanine? Powder’s the way. Still durable, still protective-just with a finish you can point to with pride during client tours.

Standard Span vs Extended Span Gantries

  • Standard Span – Up to 3 m between supports, L/400 deflection limit. If you’ve ever wheeled a 200 kg maintenance cart across a bouncy walkway, you know why stiffness matters. This design is the antidote.
  • Extended Span – 6 m clear with a UB 305×165×40, L/360 deflection. Great for keeping forklift lanes open-because nothing says “bad day” like realising you’ve boxed in your own loading route.

On-Site Fabrication vs Pre-Assembled Delivery

  • On-Site Fabrication – When your doorway’s 1.1 m wide and your ceiling’s 2.4 m high, the only way in is in pieces. Sub-assemblies under 500 kg, max length 2.5 m. Slower on-site, but it’s either that or demolish a wall.
  • Pre-Assembled Delivery – Built in our shop, lifted in whole. Max 12 m length, SWL 2× design load. When downtime is measured in thousands per hour, you want the crane booked, the sections ready, and the bolts in by tea.

Types To Choose From

Modular Steel Walkways / Bolt-Together Frames

Think pre-engineered panels with 1.2 m clear width, 5 kN/m² UDL, M16 bolts, and 20×5 mm bearer bars. They’re the chameleons of the walkway world-fit today, move tomorrow. Perfect for auto plants with model changes, but not your friend in constant-vibration press shops.

Fixed Gantry Platforms / Heavy-Duty Welded

50×50 SHS guardrails, 1 m high, mid-rails at 500 mm, load ≥5 kN/m². These don’t flex, don’t creak, don’t budge. Ideal for heavy engineering lines where trolleys roll all day. Downside? If your layout changes, you’re on the phone to us for the cutting torch.

Cantilevered Walkways / No Floor Supports

Wall-anchored at ≥5 kN/m², structural check with γM0=1.0. A lifesaver in aisles under 3.0 m wide. No posts to dodge, no collision risk-but only if your wall can take it.

Weather-Protected Walkways / Roofed Structures

Galvanised frame, 0.7 mm roofing, snow load ≥0.6 kN/m², BS EN 1991-1-4 wind spec. Keeps the rain and frost off-no gritting at 6 a.m. on a January morning. Great outdoors, pointless if you’re always indoors.

FAQs Before You Buy

companionway ladder for maintenance access

Which safety certifications must steel walkways meet for UK industrial sites?
BS EN ISO 14122 and BS EN 1991-1-1 minimum. Don’t let anyone talk you into “near enough”- HSE won’t.

What’s the best anti-slip surface for oily or wet industrial environments?
Serrated expanded metal or grating with ≤10 mm heel gaps. Stops slips, drains fast, cleans easier.

Can modular gantries be extended later if site layout changes?
Yes-up to 3 m per bay without reinforcement. We’ve done this mid-shift for a packaging plant; downtime was under an hour.

How do galvanised and powder-coated finishes compare for lifespan?
Galvanised: 20-40 years outdoors. Powder: 10-15 years indoors. Match to environment, avoid rework.

What span lengths are possible without adding extra support columns?
Up to 6 m clear with engineered beams. Anything beyond, and you’re paying for some serious section depth.
